Description
Painting: Combs Moss from Chapel Milton
A watercolour and mixed media painting of Combs Moss from Chapel Milton. Painted on my last sheets of Waterman 200lbs, 400gms, Archive quality and acid free paper. This is the first painting in the series. Painted in January 2018. Using a very limited palette.
We had a fair amount of snowy days here in the High Peak. Although I do normally paint “en plein air” this was my first daliance with working from photographs I had taken myself. I realy don’t like sitting out in the cold. I will go above and beyond for my art but not in the cold! So I bought a DSLR. I find that I use the photos to remind me of what you were looking at. Actually being there yourself allows you the oportunity to copy the veiw exactly or wave your artistic licence around liberally. I have to say I tend to do the latter. I think probably because I usually paint outside and adapt accordingly.
A little local information about Combs Moss
Combs Moss from Chapel Milton is currently on show in the Spring Gatherin at The Green Man Gallery Buxton until Wednesday 24th April 2018. On the top of Combs Moss there is an Iron age fortress called Castle Nase and is well worth a visit – infact there are a number of ancient sites locally.
My paintings tend to be relaxed tending towards realistic – I realise it’s not PC but I used to love Rolf Harris’s paintings he did live on his shows, as a child. He must have done so much prep for them.
